The exhibition The Light in the Darkness: Yonko's Path by Bulgarian avant-garde artist Yonko Vassilev, curated by Tsvetelina Anastasova, will be on view from April 16 to May 9 at the Credo Bonum Gallery in Sofia, the organizers said Monday.
The exhibition explores the life and work of artist Yonko Vassilev – YO\KO (1977 - 2023), offering an in-depth look at his personal journey and revealing the intricate relationships, emotions, and philosophies that influenced his life and art.
"Yonko Vassilev's art does not limit itself to traditional boundaries, it combines life and creativity in a way that invites the audience to connect with the deeper meaning embedded in his works. Through a powerful narrative about light and darkness, collaboration and the transformative power of art, the exhibition celebrates Yonko's legacy and invites the audience to explore the essence of his artistic spirit," the organizers said.
“Exploring fundamental themes such as the play of light and darkness, the transformation of ordinary objects into art, and the powerful role of remembrance and identity, the exhibition paints a portrait of an artist whose work was not only a reflection of his inner world, but also a dialogue with the world around him,” they add.
Yonko Vassilev – YO\KO was born in Botevgrad in 1977. In 2015, he took part in the Imago Mundi Collection project of the Luciano Benetton Foundation, a collateral event of the Venice Biennale. A year later, he received the Gaudenz B. Ruf award for his installation Yonko’s Room. Together with his wife Ina Trifonova, he worked as part of the artistic duo YO\KO+INA. Their first joint project, Objects and Objective Painting, was exhibited in 2021 at Credo Bonum Gallery in Sofia. Vassilev died on July 12, 2023.
