Tourism Minister Zaritsa Dinkova met with her Greek counterpart Olga Kefalogianni, Dinkova's ministry said in a press release on Friday. The sides discussed the bilateral joint action programme in the field of tourism for 2024-2026 and the options for promoting the ties between the two countries' scientific circles through joint initiatives.

Dinkova said that the joint action programme gave the two countries the opportunity to upgrade their successful cooperation and implement important joint projects.

Kefalogianni said that specific proposals are already being implemented within the agreement, one of which will be between universities in Athens and Sofia for stronger role of culture and sustainable tourism in economic development and social innovations.

The ministers also discussed Bulgaria becoming a party to the research observatory dedicated to the measuring of the sustainable development of coastal and sea tourism, the press release reads.

Dinkova also met with Cyprus' Deputy Tourism Minister Kostas Kumis. The talks focused on joint initiatives for promoting tourist exchange as well as the development and promotion of a common programme for attracting tourists from China.

The Bulgarian Tourism Minister said that her country is working actively on implementing a new approach to marketing and advertising with a focus on coastal municipalities and the specialized types of tourism. Tourist visits from Cyprus numbered 20,708 in 2023, which is an increase by 27.6% from 2022; the top destinations were Sofia Municipality and the Bansko mountain resort.

Kumis proposed an agreement to be signed in the field of tourism between the tourism ministries of Bulgaria and Cyprus.
