The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) supports an action plan, which enables skills development in Bulgaria and skills upgrading specifically for young people and working-age people in general, OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said on Tuesday. He was speaking in a video address to a forum in Sofia on the skills of the future in connection with Bulgaria's bid for OECD membership.

The OECD Accession Forum/Skills Matter for Bulgaria, organized by the Digital National Coalition, is taking place at Sofia Tech Park.

Cormann said that the education system in Bulgaria should develop skills for work and there should be active cooperation between employers and organizations concerned with training and developing new competences. He noted that "40% of Bulgarians have basic or above basic digital skills," adding that OECD considers these people capable of securing employment as the high-tech sector expands. "With our action plans, we will support Bulgaria to better prepare for its future labour market development," Cormann stressed.

Transferring skills from one sector to another will also be among the priorities, he said. Bulgaria has a workforce that can be further qualified, Cormann noted, adding that the country’s economy can also be improved by bringing expatriates back.
