Young teachers have nearly doubled in the last four years, caretaker Education and Science Minister Galin Tsokov said here on Wednesday. He was speaking at a ceremony in a Sofia secondary school where 134 newly appointed young teachers were welcomed. Twelve of them have been employed in kindergartens and the remainder in schools.
"There were 8,500 teachers under the age of 35 in the 2020/2021 academic year. Last year, that number was approaching 15,000, and this year, we expect it to rise even further," Tsokov said. He added that this growth is a good indication that young people are showing interest in the teaching profession.
"Teachers have shaped Bulgaria’s history. Even before we became an independent state, dozens of schools were established thanks to benefactors and people’s self-organization. This is indicative of our people's love for knowledge," Tsokov said on the eve of National Awakeners Day, November 1.
