site.btaArchaeologists Find Another Marble Statue in Heraclea Sintica

Archaeologists have discovered a large marble statue during excavations in the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica near Petrich (Southwestern Bulgaria), the head of the team, Lyudmil Vagalinski, told BTA on Friday. The statue depicts a young man. It was found lying face down but its head is missing.

This is the second statue the team has discovered. The first was a large marble deity and was found in July 2024.

Unlike the first one, the second is approximately human-sized, a little over two metres tall.

It is carved from a single marble block, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship, Vagalinski noted. Further details will be clarified, and the statue is yet to be examined from the front.

The statue was found during work in the eastern part of a canal, very close to the location where the first statue was discovered in the summer.

The archaeologists will continue their work in the coming days to fully uncover the new find.
