Bulgarian high school students won four medals at the International Chemistry Olympiad, which was held in Saudi Arabia between July 21 and 30, Bulgaria’s Natural Sciences Olympic Teams Association said on Tuesday. Competing with 327 students from 84 countries, the Bulgarians won one gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

Viktor Lilov (12th grade, Sofia High School of Mathematics) claimed Bulgaria’s gold in the competition. Lilov ranked second in the world in competition with the best 327 students from 84 countries, said the Education Ministry.

Earlier in July, Lilov also won gold at the International Biology Olympiad, thus becoming the only representative of a European Union country in the world's top 10. Currently, Lilov is the only student in the history of the International Chemistry and Biology Olympiads to win gold medals in both events.

Preslav Georgiev and Yavor Hristov (Year 12, Sofia High School of Mathematics) claimed silver medals, while Nikola Ninkov (Year 10, Sofia High School of Mathematics), took bronze.

The Bulgarian chemistry team was led by Assoc. Prof. Donka Tasheva and Prof. Penka Vasileva from the Chemistry and Pharmacy Faculty of the St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia.
