Victoria and Alexander were among the most popular names for girls and boys in Bulgaria in 2023, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said on Friday. A total of 589 Victorias and 828 Alexanders were registered in the past year. Maria and Sofia were the next most popular, with 537 and 480 newborn girls bearing these names, respectively. Topping the list of boys' names were also Georgi (822 newborns) and Kaloyan (611 newborns).

In the last 10 years, the most beloved name for girls has been Victoria, according to the NSI data. Other popular names in this country for the period 2013-2023 include Nicole, Maria, Alexandra, Gabriela, Raya and Yoana.

In 2013, Georgi took the boys’ No. 1 slot, followed by Alexander. Ten years later, they swapped places. Other popular boys' names included Martin, Kaloyan, Ivan, Teodor, Nikola, and Nikolay.

By the end of 2023, Maria (102,050 newborns), Ivanka (48,639 newborns), and Elena (47,918) topped the list of girls' names. The most common boys' name was Georgi (143,185 newborns), followed by Ivan (130,551 newborns) and Dimitar (104,856 newborns).
