Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov is the first winner of Prix Konstantin Katzarov, Fonds Katzarovi Foundation said Wednesday. The award ceremony will be held at the University of Geneva on November 29.

Gospodinov received the award for his novel Time Shelter, as well as for his overall literary work, which has brought international recognition to him and to Bulgaria.

The award was created on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Konstantin Katzarov, Bulgarian emigrant and respected jurist. The Fonds Katzarov Board of Directors will award it annually to a Bulgarian citizen or institution with an outstanding contribution to the country.

A total of 22 applications were received for the award in 2023, leaving seven finalists – historian Ivan Biliarski, Bern Institute of Anatomy Director Valentin Djonov, Assoc. Prof. of Ancient Greek Literature Nicolay Gochev, writer Georgi Gospodinov, historian Peter Stoyanovich, philologist Maya Timenova-Koen and scholar Venelin Tsachevsky.

Prof. Katzarov settled in Switzerland in 1956 but remained invariably linked to his homeland Bulgaria. In 1969 he founded a foundation at the University of Geneva, which bears his name and that of his wife. Its mission is to grant scholarships to Bulgarian researchers and students who wish to study in Switzerland, as well as to support initiatives related to strengthening ties between Bulgaria and Switzerland.
