The photo exhibition "Bulgaria and Spain. 30 Years Together in Antarctica" was unveiled at Sofia Airport's Terminal 2 on Friday. The photos are exhibited until December 31 as part of the activities on the occasion of the Spanish EU Council Presidency and is organized by the Spanish Embassy in Sofia jointly with the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute.

Sofia Airport Executive Director Jesus Caballero said that it is their pleasure to present this cooperation between Spain and Bulgaria that is related to climate change.

Spanish Ambassador to Bulgaria Alejandro Polanco Mata said that it will be a big success if the exhibition manages to make people think about environmental problems. The exhibition has already been displayed in several Bulgarian cities, he recalled. He said he is very proud of how the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute has adopted the practice of giving Spanish names to certain geographical sites.

The head of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, Prof Hristo Pimpirev, said that the exhibition, which is an idea of Bulgarian Antarctic researchers and the Spanish Embassy, has had a long life and will have an even longer life because Antarctica is a scientific diplomacy. The exhibition now includes two new photos, one of which is of Bulgaria's navy research vessel Sv Sv Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) that made its first voyage to Antarctica in winter 2022, Prof Pimpirev recalled.

The exhibition shows the history of scientific and neighborly relations that unite the Spanish and Bulgarian bases in Antarctica. The photos have been selected to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral ties in 2020.
