The legacy of Neofit Rilski (Neophyte of Rila) is as rich and multilayered as his personality, said Vice President Iliana Iotova in Blagoevgrad at the opening of a three-day scientific conference "Father Neofit Rilski - Spirituality, Enlightenment, Culture", part of the national celebrations marking 230 years since the birth of Hieromonk Neophyte of Rila, under the patronage of His Holiness Neophyte, Patriarch of Bulgaria and Metropolitan of Sofia. The beginning of the conference was held at South-West University "Neofit Rilski".
“This year we celebrate 230 years since the birth of a great Bulgarian, enlightener, educator, cleric, scribe, artist, writer and translator, but most of all a great Bulgarian teacher,” said Iliana Iotova in her address.
She pointed out that the spiritual legacy of this figure of Bulgaria’s Revival is extremely rich and multilayered, just as his personality was rich and multilayered - from the secular school and the mutual teaching method, to philosophical writings with a profound knowledge of human nature and morality, from the coded messages in the holy books to the first Bulgarian grammar, combined with a rebellious spirit and a furious desire for a Bulgarian school, taught in Bulgarian.
The Vice President noted that Bulgarian history, especially during the Revival, was written through the history of personalities, a collection of biographies of significant figures, and first and foremost this refers to Neofit Rilski.
