The Alley of the Book book market opened in Sofia Monday in the presence of Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov. 144 publishing houses display tens of thousands of books in 58 tents along the central Vitosha Boulevard and in front of the NDK convention centre. The initiative aims to bring books closer to the people in order to encourage reading and interest in books, the Bulgarian Book Association said on its website.

In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Denkov said that having money alone is not enough for the advancement of culture. "We have to find the most meaningful and most efficient way for this money to reach our children and their parents, so that if we start now we can see the results of these efforts years later".

He pointed out that the government funding for the culture sector last year was increased by over 25% but much of it was not used because there were not enough good projects.

"We have authors like Georgi Gospodinov, Zahai Karabashliev, Milen Ruskov. They are people who show that the Bulgarian language, books and art are good and beautiful, more full of life than ever,' he added.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel and Vice President Iliana Iotova sent greetings in written addresses to the organizers and the participants.

The Alley of the Book is organized by the Bulgarian Book Association as part of a literacy campaign with financial support of the National Culture Fund. It is part of the cultural calendar of the Sofia Municipality for 2023.
