Making a list of eco-friendly actions while reflecting on daily habits could help the environment, says Danita Zarichinova from Za Zemyata (For the Earth) environmental association on Tuesday, marking International Mother Earth Day.

Zarichinova called on citizens, businesses, and institutions to work together to reduce the harmful impact of major polluters such as fossil fuels, transportation, and the textile industry.

Sustainable initiatives such as clothing swaps, rainwater harvesting and separate waste collection are some very important steps to tackle major environmental problems - fast fashion pollution, water scarcity, plastic overconsumption.

More public awareness campaigns are also necessary, involving Bulgarian local and state institutions, business providers and ordinary people, Zarichinova says.

International Mother Earth Day was first celebrated in the United States on April 22, 1970, initiated by Senator Gaylord Nelson as a protest against environmental degradation. Around 20 million people, mostly students and youth, participated in rallies across the country. Starting with a team of 85 people then, on April 22, 1990, the 25-year-old student Denis Hayes launched a global campaign that brought together nearly 200 million people in 141 countries.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed April 22 as International Mother Earth Day with resolution A/RES/63/278 to remind the global community of its shared responsibility toward the planet. This year’s theme is Planet vs. Plastics, with a focus on the power of renewable energy and the need to phase out plastic pollution.
