Public social insurance (PSI) spending exceeds BGN 6.4 billion as of March 2025, with pensions remaining the largest item at BGN 5.73 billion, the National Social Security Institute (NSSI) said on Tuesday.
This represents 23.8% of the budget planned for the year and is BGN 664.8 million more compared to the same period of 2024. The number of pensioners reached 2,054,938, which is 14,757 more compared to March last year. The average pension for the month of March amounted to BGN 928.58, or BGN 101.73 (12.3%) more than in March 2024. The average retirement pension reached BGN 1,027.26, an increase of BGN 116.77 (12.8%).
The total revenue of the consolidated budget of PSI amounts to BGN 3.46 billion, or 22.8% of the annual plan, registering an increase of BGN 421.8 million compared to last year. Expenditures reached BGN 6.45 billion (23.6% of the plan), up BGN 740.1 million compared to Q1 of 2024.
The second largest group of expenditures is for cash benefits and allowances under the Social Security Code: BGN 678.7 million, or 22.1% of the annual plan. They also grew by BGN 73.7 million compared to the same period of the previous year.
Net transfers under the PSI budget as of March amounted to BGN 3.06 billion.
