The Svilengrad territorial department of the Haskovo Regional Prosecution Service indicted a 36-year-old man from Turkiye for attempting to smuggle over EUR 500,000 across the Bulgarian border, the state prosecution reported on Tuesday. The cash was discovered by customs officers at the Kapitan Andreevo border check point on April 18.

The driver was in a heavy-duty truck on his way to Turkiye. The documents he presented suggested that he was carrying goods from Germany to Afghanistan.

A thorough inspection of the vehicle with X-ray equipment showed abnormal densities in the driver's compartment. On subsequent physical inspection, euro banknotes were found in the mattress of the driver's rest bed and in the upholstery of both seats. The currency was equivalent to BGN 1,026,693.
