Two Candidates Run for Top Office at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

The choice of the new president of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) will be made between two natural scientists: Corresponding Member Evelina Slavcheva (a chemist) and Academician Hristo Naidenski (a microbiologist). The platforms of the two bidding finalists are published on the BAS website.

The future president will be elected by the BAS General Assembly on December 2. The term of the current leader, Academician Julian Revalski, expires on December 7.

According to the rules, an eligible candidate for BAS president should be an academician or a corresponding member who has not turned 70 by the time of taking over the post (in this case, December 8, 2024).

Revalski was elected to his first term as BAS President on December 1, 2016, and re-elected on November 30, 2020.

One of the present candidates, Corresponding Member Evelina Slavcheva, founded and headed the Section on Hydrogen Systems with Polymer Electrolyte (2012-2020) at the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems. Between 2012 and 2015, she chaired the Institute’s Scientific Council, and between 2015 and 2023, she served as its director. She was president of the BAS General Assembly from 2016 until June 2024. Slavcheva has authored 127 research papers, owns a patent and has led 23 research projects.

Academician Hristo Naidenski heads the Department of Infectious Microbiology and the Laboratory of Bacterial Virulence, Resistance and New Antimicrobial Agents at the Institute of Microbiology. He was director of the Institute between 2012 and 2020. Naidenski has led a number of Bulgarian and international scientific and applied research projects. He has authored 224 papers, articles and book chapters. He co-owns a patent and a utility model.
