A forum organized by the Psychological Center for Research here on Monday promoted the message that people with disabilities benefit society and should be given opportunities for career development. Participants at the event agreed that institutions and specialized organizations should join forces to actively involve this group of society in the labour market.

Caretaker Minister of Labour and Social Policy Ivaylo Ivanov said at the forum that people with disabilities are a source of potential for the Bulgarian economy, as they can help tackle labour shortages.

US Ambassador to Bulgaria Kenneth Merten said that the US passed legislation dedicated to people with disabilities in 1990 to alleviate their experience in society. Merten reported that companies that hire workers with disabilities tend to do better, achieve higher revenues and less staff turnover compared to their competitors.

According to the President of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria, Plamen Dimitrov, it is worth considering a Labour Day in Bulgaria on the first Monday of September. The occasion could raise awareness of the rights of people with disabilities.

President of the Economic and Social Council, Zornitsa Rusinova, said that her organization is working on social economy and solidarity economy issues with specific proposals that could improve the employment of people with disabilities.

The event was kicked off by the head of the Psychological Center for Research Diana Indjova and attended by the Deputy Chair of the National Assembly, Rositsa Kirova.
