President Rumen Radev attended the commemorative ceremony on the 139th anniversary of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia in 1885, which took place in Plovdiv, South Central Bulgaria, on Friday.

Radev, who is also a Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, took part in the traditional military tattoo in Plovdiv, which is the culmination of the observances across the country on September 6.

Delivering a speech at the solemn event, Radev said that on this day honour is being paid to a remarkable generation of enlightening historical figures, who "without considering [the interests] of the great powers, by the force of their own ideal, swept away the boundaries of an immense historical injustice".

The President noted that he is honoured to be in the millennial city of Plovdiv on today's important date, where the echoes of the historic act of Unification continue to reverberate for 139 years now. The most inspiring episode of Bulgarian political boldness took place on September 6, 1885, when the colours of the Bulgarian flag were waved over Plovdiv for the first time as a symbol of the Unification of the Bulgarian Principality and Eastern Rumelia, Radev said.
