The Ministry of Agriculture and Food is implementing an ambitious plan to expand irrigated areas from the current 40,000 ha to 150,000 ha, caretaker Agriculture Minister Georgi Tahov said Thursday. He held a meeting with representatives of branch organisations at the Ministry.

The first step towards the development of hydro-remediation is a complete inventory of irrigated areas managed by Irrigation Systems EAD, which has not been done since 1992, and the unification of the data in a single digital model, Tahov said. The inventory is to be carried out by geodesic surveying of the facilities and aerial surveying. A working group will elaborate the overall documentation and procedure to start updating process of irrigated areas’ balance in Bulgaria, the Minister added.
