“The core commitment of our ministry is to make the country a centre of environmental and climate science globally,” said caretaker Minister of Environment and Water Petar Dimitrov at a briefing before the start of the 61st session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Sofia is hosting the forum, which runs July 27 – Aug 2.

The opening of the 61st session is extremely important for our country, because it confirms Bulgaria's role as an active participant in climate diplomacy in the global aspect, the minister said. We are witnessing more and more frequent and extreme weather events, such as the fires in the country in recent weeks. In order to assess the impact of these changes, we need extremely accurate and detailed scientific research to give us an idea of what to expect globally and what measures we could take to mitigate this impact, Dimitrov said.

The Environment Minister pointed out that the forum is the result of the successful participation of the Bulgarian delegation at COP28 in Dubai. He highlighted the efforts of his predecessor, former Minister of Environment and Water Julian Popov, in holding this forum.

At the official opening of the 61st IPCC session, Minister Dimitrov highlighted the role of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, which is part of the Ministry of Environment and Water. He pointed out that a number of side events on climate change and its risks have also been organized.
