On November 22, 1960, the Druzhba [Friendship] ice rink was officially inaugurated in the park near the Vassil Levski National Stadium. The opening event was a match between the ice hockey teams of Lokomotiv and Lenin.
The ice rink was used for practice and the matches in the national ice hockey championship. The rest of the time Sofia residents were free to skate there.
After 1989, the ice rink was renamed Yunak and became a stadium, presumably restoring a stadium of the same name that used to exist at roughly the same location in the early 20th century, but it ceased to be used for sport activities. A disco was built on the same spot but that was closed down after a tragic event in which seven children aged 10 to 15 died in a stampede in December 2001.
