Mr Nathaniel Copsey has been appointed His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Bulgaria in succession to Dr Rob Dixon who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment, the British Embassy in Sofia said. Ambassador Copsey will take up his appointment during August 2024.
Nathaniel Copsey was Speechwriter to the Foreign Secretary, covering the whole range of UK foreign policy issues, but most of his career has focused on Europe, particularly the EU and Eastern Europe.
In 2015 and 2016, he worked at the Referendum Units of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and of the Cabinet Office. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he started working on Ukraine-related issues.
Before joining the UK's Diplomatic Service, Copsey was engaged in research. Between 2009 and 2015, he was Professor of European Politics at Aston University.
The new ambassador speaks Bulgarian. He will be joined by his family.
Nathaniel Copsey said: "I am honoured and delighted to be moving to Bulgaria as the British Ambassador. Never before has our partnership been as important as it is today. From education to defence, technology to trade, we are working more closely together than ever before - as Lord Cameron's visit last month shows. My top goal will be to strengthen our vital Strategic Partnership even further. Bulgaria is an extraordinary country with a glorious past and a magnificent future. My family looks forward to our arrival later this year - and to making many new friends."
