Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria (DSB) leader Atanas Atanasov proposed here on Sunday that the candidate of the democratic community in the 2026 presidential elections be elected by primary elections, the DSB press centre reported.

The party, which is part of the Democratic Bulgaria coalition partnering with Continue the Change in Parliament, said the idea is based on the successful example of the transition period, when Petar Stoyanov was elected president after winning against Zhelyo Zhelev in primary elections. Atanasov proposed to start talks within the Democratic Bulgaria coalition and then with Continue the Change on organizing these primary elections. "If there are, of course, others who want to join, let them propose their candidates. Whoever wins these primary elections will be our president," Atanasov said.

Atanasov was in Varna on the occasion of a party meeting, which elected Dr Ivaylo Mitkovski as head of the local organization of the formation.
