Romania’s largest Easter fair is underway in the city of Craiova. Fairytale houses and characters inspired by the Brothers Grimm's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs have visitors flocking to Europe's third largest city park, Nicolae Romanescu, which was built in 1903. Floral installations, gazebos, and carriages provide lovely backdrops for photo shoots.
The largest Ferris wheel in Romania is the centerpiece of the fair, with a height of 40 metres and a capacity of 140 seats. The Ferris wheel is surrounded by spectacular decor, installations, workshops, a roller coaster, a climbing wall, and a go-kart track. Boats shaped like swans and animals from the local zoo complement the event’s setting. A new addition to the traditional fair this year is a religious scene of the Resurrection, created in collaboration with the Metropolis of Oltenia.
On display for visitors of all ages are traditional products, hand-painted eggs, and handmade creations by artisans and merchants from across Romania, as well as an abundance of treats such as caramel popcorn, cotton candy, donuts, chocolate fondue, and ice cream, to name but a few. The youngest of visitors can enjoy puppet shows and take part in dance workshops and various competitions.
The rich programme of the fair, which will run until May 12, also includes folk dances and musical performances from Bulgaria, Greece, and Moldova.
In 2022, Craiova topped the list of the best Easter fairs in Europe published by the European Best Destination website. In 2023, the city was named the best Easter destination in Europe, local media recalled. Last year, the Craiova Municipality spent more than EUR 70,000 for Easter Fair decor and promotion of the event.
