A Turkish national identified as M. D., aged 52, has been charged with attempted smuggling of gold jewellery worth BGN 88,331, the prosecution service said in a press release on Thursday. The incident occurred at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the border with Turkiye on Wednesday.

Customs officers performed an inspection of a bus travelling from Turkiye to Romania and found four packages with yellow metal items hidden in an elastic belt fastened to the waist of one of the 23 passengers on board. The concealed items include rings, pendants, bracelets, chains, necklaces and earrings. According to an expert's report, the 876.90 grams of jewellery found were made of 14- and 22-carat gold.

M. D. has been released on bail of BGN 3,000 and has been banned from leaving the country, the press release said.
