The assessment of the strategic project for the construction of a new border control checkpoint between Bulgaria's Stroumyani and North Macedonia's Berovo is at the finish line, the Blagoevgrad Regional Administration reported Saturday. The work of the assessment commission concludes next week, and an agreement on the project's funding will be signed by the end of October.

The assessment commission together with officials from the main beneficiaries - the Blagoevgrad Regional Administration, represented by Regional Governor Maria Dimova, and the Customs Administration of the Republic of North Macedonia - visited the construction site to established the actual state of the border infrastructure, the press release reads.

In early September, Bulgaria and North Macedonia signed a protocol for the construction project of the new border crossing and the road connecting the Municipalities of Stroumyani and Berovo. The project is aimed at improving regional connectivity and driving economic growth by easing the traffic of goods and people, strengthening communication connections and easing access to the main transport network, the Blagoevgrad Regional Administration said.
