Bulgaria's Ivan Vazov National Theatre is going on tour in Skopje with the play Orpheus during the Skupi Festival on October 10, the theatre troupe said on Tuesday. Orpheus is directed by world-renowned Slovenian director and 2017 winner of the European Theatre Prize Jernej Lorenci.

“The play is based on the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, recreated through the sensibility and reflection of the modern man, who is faced with several existential problems: the war as a constant state of humanity, summoning but also consuming its creative energy; the forgetfulness and (self-)delusions to which we voluntarily succumb, avoiding the truth; the artist’s loneliness as their desired and defended privilege; the power of love in its metaphysical and mystical dimensions,” the National Theatre said.

The production has won the Icarus Award for Best Director and Best Performance, as well as the Icarus Audience Award for Best Dramatic Performance. Its playwright is Matic Starina, its set designer Branko Hojnik, its composer Branko Rožman, and its choreographer Gregor Luštek. The costume designer is Belinda Radulović.
