Send Alert to European Anti-Fraud Office about
Suspected Misuse of EU Funding in Sofia Renovation Project

Sofia, February 4 (BTA) - MPs from the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) send an alert to European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) about suspected misuse of EU funding in a project for a makeover of the Sofia Largo, the BSP said in a press release Monday.

Last Wednesday Socialist MP Elena Yoncheva made public a voice recording of Culture Minister Boil Banov dating from 2016. In the recording Banov, then deputy culture minister, appears to be instructing his Ministry officials and construction supervision officers to doctor documents so as cover up a delay of the EU-funded project for a makeover of the Sofia Largo and help the contractor avoid paying 700,000 leva in damages.

Banov dismissed the allegations, arguing that the sound recordings have been fabricated in a smear campaign.

The alert to OLAD is signed by BSP Chairperson Kornelia Ninova, Yoncheva and other Socialist MPs. LY/ZH
