EU Should Take Up
Its Functions on
INF Treaty - Ivaylo Kalfin

Sofia, February 4 (BTA) - At a press conference on Sunday, former foreign minister and current ABV party member Ivaylo Kalfin demanded that the Bulgarian government refine its position on the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty and ask the EU to take up its function as a partner and negotiator between the USA and Russia, "which still has not happened".

According to Kalfin, breaking the treaty will lay pressure on the whole peace and stability system in Europe. He said that refusing the treaty will inevitably lead to a new deployment of missiles in Europe, including nuclear weapons. "The question is especially important for us because Bulgaria has never before deployed foreign missiles on home territory," Kalfin noted, adding that without such a treaty there could be a new armament contest and pressure on security.
