CITUB To Begin Campaign
Against Gray Economy
In Auto Trade and Repair Sector

Sofia, February 12 (BTA) - The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) will launch a campaign against the gray economy, focusing on automobile trade and repair, driver training and road traffic safety, said the CITUB press centre on Tuesday.

Preliminary data shows that over 300,000 people work in this sector, often in poor conditions, without social security and social protection, CITUB pointed out. Unpaid taxes on auto repair alone exceed 120 million leva per year, they added.

The campaign will start on February 13 at 11 AM at CITUB headquarters with a press conference titled "Does gray economy in Bulgaria threaten human lives?".

The project will also explore gray economy in other sectors - agriculture, light industry and construction. Data on the approximate share of gray economy in all these sectors will be presented, along with information on whether gray economy threatens human lives and its connection to road traffic safety, how many people are employed and what conditions they work in. Measures will be proposed to bring these sectors into the formal economy. CITUB will also offer technological solutions against the gray economy. LY/DT
