Accident Black Spot
Map to Be
Released

Rousse, on the Danube, April 23 (BTA) - An accident black spot map of Bulgaria will be available shortly, which will identify not just areas that have seen a number of accidents in the past but high-risk areas as well. Malina Kroumova, head of the State Agency for Road Safety, said Tuesday that to reduce serious traffic accidents, the authorities should improve the infrastructure, above all by introducing lower speed limits in population centres and ensuring safety at roadside outlets.

In addition, public information campaigns can help change people's mindset towards more responsible driving.

Kroumova commented that while an upper age limit for drivers is unnecessary, the physical and psychological aptitude of older drivers should be controlled better.

Krassimir Gigov, Director General of the Bulgarian Red Cross, said harsher punishments would not be enough to reduce fatalities on the road network because self-discipline also plays an important role.

Kroumova and Gigov participated in a forum at Rousse University on the role of civil society for road traffic injury prevention and the chain of survival. IG/DD
