Varna, on the Black Sea, April 30 (BTA) - A total of 591 villages in Bulgaria have one or no residents, according to National Statistical Institute figures as of the end of 2018.

The figures also show that Bulgaria has 5,256 settlements, including 257 towns and cities and 4, 997 villages. Two monasteries - Klisura and Rila - are considered settlements in their own right.

The number of villages with one or no residents are 20 more than in 2017.

The total number of villages with a single-digit population is 427. 164 villages have no permanent residents. 72 have one resident, 65 have two, 48 have three, 50 have four, 40 have five, 34 have six, 33 have seven, 48 have eight and 37 have nine.

The largest number of depopulated villages (64) and single-digit population villages (112) are in the North-Central Region of Gabrovo. This region has a total of 349 population centres which means that nearly half of them are either fully or almost depopulated.

Next is the nearby region of Veliko Turnovo where 55 villages have no permanent residents and 88 villages have less than 10 residents.

The largest group of villages (713) have between 101 and 200 residents. Next (509) are villages with 201-300 population and then (406) with 301-400 population.

Two villages have between 5,001 and 6,000 residents and one has over 6,000 residents.

Lozen, in Sofia Region, remains the biggest village even after it lost 40 residents. The second-biggest village is Aydemir with population of 5,538.

Curiously, 2,467 villages or close to half of the total number, are larger than the smallest Bulgarian town, Melnik, which has 183 residents. RY/LN/
