In the context of ongoing conflicts near the EU and given the upcoming structuring of the European institutions in the mandate of the new European Commission, the topic of citizens' security should be a priority for politicians, said Vice President Iliana Iotova at a meeting with a delegation from the Landtag [state parliament] of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Federal Republic of Germany, led by its President Andre Kuper. The members of the state parliament, who represent various political forces and departments, are visiting Bulgaria, the press centre of the head of State said here on Thursday.

Iotova highlighted the excellent bilateral relations and good cooperation between Bulgaria and the Federal Republic of Germany, pointing out that, among the 16 federal states, North Rhine-Westphalia is the largest foreign trade partner of Bulgaria and a leading investor from the German side. More than 100,000 Bulgarian citizens live in the federal province. Iotova thanked the German side for the fact that the Bulgarians have the opportunity to study the Bulgarian language and preserve their traditions.

The Vice President expressed her condolences for those who died in the attack in Solingen, pointing out that Bulgaria adamantly condemns this brutal act of violence. Iotova added that the tragic event is an occasion to analyze the effectiveness of EU policy in the field of migration and asylum and the need for adequate management of migration flows, combating illegal human trafficking, working mechanisms and procedures for granting asylum and relocation. "As a country located on the external border of the EU, Bulgaria expects the support and solidarity of the European institutions and the Member States to strengthen the capacity to deal with migrant flows," she said.

Iotova also raised the issue of the membership of Bulgaria and Romania in the Schengen area, pointing out that after the opening of sea and air borders, the fears among the Member States about Bulgaria's accession have dissipated. She expressed her gratitude for Germany's support on the matter and insisted on the full acceptance of Bulgaria, including land borders, which will make the EU even more secure.

The Vice President noted the importance of policies concerning the energy security of Europe and its citizens in the process of transition to a green economy. When implementing the ambitious green measures, it is necessary to take various risks into account and not to forget that this transformation affects the lives of millions and their well-being, said Iotova. In relation to agricultural policies, the Vice President also focused on the protection of own production and the competitiveness of European farmers.
