site.btaPresident Radev Confers Order of Madara Horseman, First Class, on Irish Ambassador Feeney

President Rumen Radev Wednesday conferred the Order of the Madara Horseman, First Class, on Irish Ambassador Martina Feeney for her contribution to the strengthening and development of relations between Bulgaria and Ireland.

Radev said that in 2021, during Ambassador Feeney's tour of duty, Bulgaria and Ireland celebrated the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. In over 30 years, the two countries have managed to build fruitful relations based on friendship and partnership, the President said. He expressed Bulgaria's gratitude for Ireland's support during the EU accession process and full integration in the EU.

The President noted Feeney's personal commitment to deepening and expanding relations between Bulgaria and Ireland, highlighting the significant potential for growth of Irish investment in a number of areas in Bulgaria, including energy, innovation and tourism.

The President also noted the Ambassador's initiatives related to Roma integration and her support for the activities of the local authorities in Blagoevgrad (Southwestern Bulgaria) around the annual competition in memory of Irish journalist Veronica Guerin, which honours journalists for their contribution to the fight against the spread of drugs.

For her part, the diplomat said she accepted the high distinction not only as a sign of gratitude, but as a symbol of the deep friendship between Bulgaria and Ireland. She stressed the excellent cooperation and support she has received during her term and underlined that as EU Member States, the two countries share common values.
