Turkiye's highways and bridges will be free for transport traffic from June 15 to 19 on the occasion of the holy Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, Turkish media reported on Friday.

Eid al-Adha is one of the two biggest holidays in Islam. In Turkiye, a nine-day holiday vacation begins on June 15.

The state and municipal offices, the stock exchange and some banks will be closed during the holiday, but the commercial outlets will be open.

The long holiday vacation is favorable for hoteliers and transport companies as millions of Turks head to resorts or their hometowns.

Air ticket sales for Eid al-Adha increased by 40% compared to the previous month, Anadolu News Agency reported. Antalya was the most favourable destination, followed by Trabzon, Diyarbakir, Van and Bodrum. Hotel bookings increased by 82% compared to the previous month.

Turkish citizens from European countries have already started to arrive home for the holiday, so traffic is also heavy on the land borders between Europe and Turkiye, the National Customs Agency said. Among the preferred destinations abroad by Turks, Tirana holds the first place, followed by Podgorica and Pristina.
