The Council of Ministers and Transparency International Bulgaria Friday signed a Memorandum of Cooperation. It is an expression of the shared willingness to pool their efforts in preventing and combating corruption and to work towards high standards of good governance.

The document was signed by Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov and Transparency International Bulgaria Executive Director Kalin Slavov.

Denkov praised the proactive stance of Transparency International. He asserted that the fight against corruption requires efforts from the government, as well as from civil society and the non-governmental sector. He is confident that the memorandum will contribute to the Cabinet's consistent and decisive anti-corruption actions.

For his part, Slavov confirmed the commitment of Transparency International Bulgaria to cooperate in this challenging area. He said the NGO's studies of the anti-corruption environment are objective and thorough and serve as reference for various investment decisions and policy measures.

Based on the memorandum, the Council of Ministers and the NGO will be able to transfer know-how in the implementation of practical instruments for good governance, including those developed within the OECD. These include internationally recognized standards of good governance, OECD-developed guidelines, systems for assessing the quality of governance, and mechanisms for transparency in the handling of public resources. The interaction will also help to provide timely information on European and global processes.
