Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev and the creator of the global PISA study Andreas Schleicher, Director for Education and Skills at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Special Advisor on Education Policy to the OECD Secretary-General, discussed the development of schools as community hubs that actively engage school communities and support the development of key skills for young people to succeed. The news was announced by Terziev in Facebook on Tuesday.

The PISA study is a globally recognized tool that many countries use to improve their education systems, Terziev said. There is no lack of good examples of how municipalities are using the data to improve education quality at the local level, he added.

The two sides also discussed good examples of local government initiatives and policies across the world that improve student outcomes and overcome inequalities between and within schools, Terziev further said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov and Schleicher discussed the gaps in the education system in Bulgaria that led to the alarming data from the international PISA study at the end of 2023.
