Bulgarian swimmer Petar Mitsin reached the semi-finals of the men’s 200m butterfly event at the World Swimming Championships in Doha, Qatar.
In the preliminaries, the 18-year-old Bulgarian finished fifth in heat four, stopping the clock at 1:57.52 minutes. Thus, Mitsin finished 16th, tied with Japan's Nao Horomura. An hour later the two swam a tryout to secure a place among the top 16. Mitsin won the tryout with a time of 1:56.91 minutes, improving on his result in the preliminaries.
The semifinals of the men’s 200m butterfly event will be held on Tuesday evening. Mitsin is deck seeded in lane eight in heat one and will swim at 7:33 p.m.
In 2023, Mitsin became the first Bulgarian swimmer to set a world junior record. He earned two Olympic berths for Paris 2024 in 400m and 800m freestyle and met a 200m Olympic B standard.
