site.btaBulgaria Wins Five Medals at International Mathematics Olympiad in UK
The best Bulgarian mathematics students won five medals at the most prestigious mathematics competition in the world for 2024. At the 65th International Mathematics Olympiad, the Bulgarian national team won 3 silver and 2 bronze medals and an honorary diploma, the Association of Science Olympic Teams said.
The Olympiad took place from July 11 to 22 in the UK and brought together 609 students from 108 countries.
The team is coached by Prof. Stanislav Harizanov from the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies and the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Assistant Professor Stoyan Boev and Dragomir Grozev.
In the team ranking Bulgaria placed 27th e in the world and 11th in Europe with 126 points, falling behind the 25th place in 2023.
The preparation and participation in the competition are supported by the Education Ministry, the Union of Mathematicians in Bulgaria, the America for Bulgaria Foundation the Association of the Olympic Science Teams.
The International Mathematics Olympiad is the first Science Olympiad. It was founded in 1959 in Romania. Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania are the only countries that have participated in all editions of the Olympiad since its inception.
So far, the Bulgarian team has won a total of 308 medals at the International Mathematics Olympiad: 57 gold, 130 silver and 121 bronze.
