Romania's largest Christmas market opened in Bucharest on Thursday evening. It is held in the Constitution Square in front of the Parliament building, which is the second largest in the world after the Pentagon.
Despite the near-freezing temperatures, thousands of Bucharest residents and visitors to the city gathered around a 30-meter-high decorative Christmas tree wrapped with 70,000 lights to count down the minutes until 200,000 festive lights were switched on. The button was pressed by three students who won gold medals at the 2023 International Mathematics Olympiad in Japan.
Until December 26, people will be able to visit 130 wooden stalls of artisans, urban artists, and local producers offering a wide variety of seasonal products, culinary delicacies, toys, souvenirs, handmade items, cosmetics, and clothing.
This year’s Christmas market attractions include live concerts, a Santa Claus house, a Ferris wheel, snowball games, meetings with artists on stilts, and Christmas card-making and gift-wrapping workshops. Admission is free.
Some 30,000 people visited the market on Thursday alone. Over one million visitors are expected by December 26.
