site.btaPM Denkov: Proton Therapy Centre to be Built on State Funding
Bulgaria will have a proton accelerator and will seek national funding for the construction of a proton therapy centre for the treatment of children with oncohematological diseases, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov told journalists, as quoted by the Government Information Service on Friday.
Two days ago, the government excluded the proton therapy centre from the list of projects under the Recovery and Resilience Plan due to its delayed implementation by the caretaker government.
“No one has given up the proton accelerator project, but it is nearly one year overdue. There is a set deadline - the end of 2026 - for the completion of all projects which will be funded under the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The proton therapy centre project is complex, and the risk of not carrying it out in time is already close to 100%. We cannot take this risk,” the Prime Minister said, justifying the government's decision to give up European funding for the proton accelerator and allocate money for it from the national budget.
