A total of 2,628,291 passengers (646,896 motor vehicles) entered Turkiye through crossings at the border with Bulgaria between June 22 and September 10, according to data of the Thrace Regional Directorate of Customs and Foreign Trade. During the same period, 2,550,161 passengers with 619,499 vehicles left Turkiye through the Bulgarian border.

The period between June and September had the most intense traffic of Turkish citizens from European countries to Turkiye and vice versa. Their main car route passes through Bulgaria. The Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint between Bulgaria and Turkiye was the busiest in that period.

According to the Thrace Regional Directorate of Customs and Foreign Trade, the summer of 2023 saw a record-high traffic of passengers through the Bulgarian-Turkish border crossings for the last five years.

Dogu Haber Ajansi explains this with the price rise of air tickets, which is why many Turkish citizens living in European countries have opted to travel to Turkiye with their cars via Bulgaria.
