SANS Chair:
"We Need State Strategy on
Danger of Spreading of Radical Islam"

Sofia, November 27 (BTA) - "We need an analysis of the satiation
and a state strategy," State Agency for National Security
(SANS) Chairman Vladimir Pisanchev said at a closed-door hearing
in Parliament on Thursday. The hearing was in connection with a
November 25 special operation conducted in the southern regions
of Pazardjik, Plovdiv, Smolyan and Assenovgrad cracking down on
persons suspected of disseminating an anti-democratic ideology
and propagandizing war.

"At present, there is no specific threat for the state but, as a
whole, the situation has been growing ever more tense and we
should react as a state - both institutionally and
legislatively," said Pisanchev. SANS or the other special
services cannot counter this threat on their own, he added.

In his opinion, if the operation had not been held ten days
earlier due to a leak of information, it would have had a bigger
effect and more evidence would have been collected. "But I
think that we have sufficient evidence even now. Besides, we
have gathered enough material for analysis and it is yet to be
considered by the experts, the SANS chief observed. He explained
that the information leak was unconscious.

According to Pisanchev, it is not necessary to call the
Consultative Council on National Security under the President at
present.

Regarding the news about the establishment of an Islamic Centre
at Malinova Dolina Quarter in Sofia, he explained that normal
Islam should be supported, while any extremities should be
eradicated. "We cannot say that the centre would promote the
spreading of radical Islam," said he.

The SANS Chairman also said that the closed-door meeting
discussed amendments to the Penal Code incriminating the
following of terrorist organizations. He noted that such
legislation is accepted across Western Europe at present.

There should be close and narrow interaction between the
institutions in connection with teachers, entering the country
on legal documents, said the SANS Chair. In his opinion,
Bulgaria has begun assuming a strategic place in the Black Sea
region.

Taking a question, Pisanchev said that he will not resign. The
SANS Chair noted that he has been elected by Parliament and he
may be released by the same institution, if the MPs so decide.
