Exhibition Presenting
Bulgarian Cities, Landmarks
Opens in Istanbul

Istanbul, December 15 (BTA exclusive by Nahide Deniz) - An
exhibition presenting Bulgaria's best known and most scenic
cities and towns opened in the building of the Bulgarian
Consulate General in Istanbul. Fifteen art photographs show
Sofia, Plovdiv, Melnik and other landmarks, part of which are
under the protection of UNESCO and attract tourists from across
the world.

"The exhibition is a joint project of the Foreign Ministry's
Institute for Culture and the Consulate General. The idea is to
present beautiful Bulgaria in Istanbul, so that the Bulgarian
citizens who live here can enjoy them and our Turkish friends
have a close look at what they can visit in Bulgaria, so that
foreigners who come here for consular services could get
familiar with a tiny fragment of Bulgaria," Bulgaria's Consul
General in Istanbul Angel Angelov told BTA.

In his words, the exhibition is part of a concept to visualize
Bulgaria and thus attract more Turkish tourists. The Consul
pointed out that Bulgarian travel agencies organized a seminar
in Istanbul a fortnight ago, which attracted keen interest.

Assoc. Prof. Yuksel Ozkan, Chairman of the Bursa-based Balkan
Refugees Culture and Solidarity Foundation (BAL-GOC), attended
the opening of the exhibition. "We are always ready to cooperate
in events like this exhibition, which seeks to strengthen
friendship and amity between Turkey and Bulgaria. We hope to be
able to open the doors even wide, so that millions of Turkish
citizens can visit Bulgaria and see its tourist sights and thus
help the economic development of those areas," he said.

Fatma Osman, who represents a Turkish company co-organizing the
exhibition, stressed that Bulgaria is not well known on the
Turkish travel market as a destination for various types of
tourism. "Our principal target audience is Turkish tourists and
Turkish tour operators, who come to the Bulgarian Consulate
General in Istanbul for visas. They can see what is available in
Bulgaria, and we can thus facilitate them and ultimately
encourage them to send more Turkish tourists to Bulgaria," she
said.

Public figures, intellectuals, representatives of NGOs of
emigrants from Bulgaria to Turkey and numerous members of the
Bulgarian community in Istanbul, headed by Community Chairman
Vasil Liyaze, were among those present at the opening of the
exhibition. A folk ensemble of pupils of the English Language
School in Sofia gave a concert. PK/LG
