870 km Optical Route
to Link 29
Municipalities

Sofia, December 15 (BTA) - Testing is starting of optical cable
routes linking municipal and regional capitals that are being
built under a EU-co-funded high-speed next-generation broadband
Internet access project, Krassimir Simonski, Executive Director
of the Electronic Communication Networks and Information Systems
Executive Agency under the Ministry of Transport, said last
week.

The project is due for completion in May 2015. An approximately
870 km long optical cable infrastructure will be deployed,
ensuring connectivity to 29 municipalities and 24 settlements,
or 7 per cent of Bulgaria's territory. High-speed
next-generation Internet will thus be accessible to 277,765
residents or 8 per cent of the population outside the regional
capitals and Sofia and 4 per cent of the country's total
population.

The project costs 39 million leva, of which 85 per cent come
from EU funds and 15 per cent from the national budget. PK/LG
