Military Medical Academy Ex-Chief Tonev
Charged with Wilful
Mismanagement

Sofia, March 5 (BTA) - The Sofia Military District Prosecution
Office Thursday constituted the former director of the Military
Medical Academy (MMA), Major General Stoyan Tonev, as a party
accused of concluding unprofitable contracts and wilful
mismanagement, the prosecuting magistracy said in a press
release.

According to the prosecution case, General Tonev, in his
capacity as a public official, wilfully failed to take care of
managing the property entrusted to him, as a result of which the
MMA sustained detriment to the amount of 96,000 leva in the
period from November 29, 2004 until December 1, 2007.

The General is also charged with wilfully concluding two
unprofitable contracts with a private company, by virtue of
which MMA-owned laser systems for dermatoplasty were provided
for use to the company. Under the first contract, dated December
3, 2007, the hospital sustained detriment amounting to 98,000
leva, and the detriment under the second contract, dated October
5, 2009, is to the amount of 447,000 leva.

Bail of 10,000 leva has been set as a precautionary measure to
secure Tonev's appearance.

At the end of February, Parliament terminated Tonev's
credentials as GERB MP at his request. He resigned in the wake
of a scandal over huge losses that a private medical practice
had been generating for years at the MMA's expense, allegedly
not without its former director's assistance. LI, PK/LG
