Parliament Chair, MPs and Ambassadors Observe Anniversary of Bulgarian Jews' Rescue
Sofia, March 10 (BTA) - Parliament Chair Tsetska Tsacheva, MPs
from various parliamentary groups, ambassadors and dozens of
citizens observed in front of Parliament on Tuesday the 72nd
anniversary of the rescue of Bulgaria's Jews from deportation to
Nazi concentration camps during World War II.
Chairman of the Shalom Organisation of Jews in Bulgaria, Maxim
Benvenisti, expressed gratitude to the Bulgarian people, the
regular people who for three years supported their fellow Jewish
citizens and encouraged Bulgarian public figures and
politicians to have the strength and oppose demands for
deporting the Bulgarian Jews. According to him, no other
European peoples supported their Jews as the Bulgarians did.
Israel's Ambassador here Shaul Kamisa Raz noted that the saving
of Bulgarian Jews is an act of humanity, tolerance, love and
friendship between the two peoples. According to him, however,
the lessons from the Holocaust have not been learned yet because
similar phenomena can still be seen in many places across the
world, including in Europe. He thanked the Government and more
specially the Ministry of Education and Science, which makes
efforts to have the Holocaust lessons learned through
educational programmes.
Wreaths and flowers were laid by almost all parliamentary
groups, the ambassadors of Israel, the US, Turkey, Greece,
Britain, among others.
