Labour Minister: Election Campaigning Should Not Use Public Resources

Shoumen, Northeastern Bulgaria, June 8 (BTA) - Deputy Prime
Minister and Labour Minister Ivailo Kalfin said that election
campaigning should not resort to public resources and taxpayer
instruments. He was speaking at a news conference at the BTA
press club in Shoumen on Monday.

The news conference was attended by ABV deputy leader Roumen
Petkov and ABV members.

Kalfin said that earlier in day he urged employees of the local
offices of the Labour Ministry to prevent state social policies
being turned into an electioneering instrument. In his words, a
large part of social services are delegated to the local
authorities and it is unacceptable that these funds are
distributed by the local mayors according to political
affiliations as part of their election campaign.

Kalfin said he had ordered a check whether all procedures and
requirements for assigning personal assistants are met over
claims that in smaller municipalities personal assistants are
assigned based on sympathies.

He said there are similar problems with temporary employment
schemes and energy allowances. Kalfin said that in order to
address the issue, energy allowance applications will no longer
be submitted at local town halls.

ABV announced formally its first three mayoral candidates.
