Teachers' Trade Union: 45% of  School Teachers Subjected to  Violence by Pupils, Parents

Sofia, June 10 (BTA) - Forty-five per cent of school teachers
and 65 per cent of kindergarten teachers in Bulgaria have been
subjected to violence by pupils and parents, and this is
psychological abuse, said Yanka Takeva, head of the Trade Union
of Bulgarian Teachers(TUBT) with the Confederation of
Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria. She was asked by
journalists Wednesday whether the cases of teachers' physical
and verbal abuse by parents and pupils are increasing in number.

Takeva commented on the topic in connection with a recent case
in Veliko Turnovo (North Central Bulgaria), in which an eight
grader hit her Bulgarian language and literature teacher because
he had given her a "fail" grade.

"Something is happening in every moment in the Bulgarian school
and this is why in 2013 the TUBT requested from the 42nd
National Assembly - and it was adopted - an amendment to the
Penal Code, Art. 113 and 114, and thus teachers' physical abuse
was criminalized," Takeva said.

The TUBT Wednesday organized a national conference on "The
Interaction between Secondary and Higher Education: Prospects
and Solutions".

Takeva also said that there should be a very high increase of
the salaries in secondary education, with teachers' starting
salary being no less than 1,200 leva.
