President Plevneliev: Share of Volunteers in
2014 Amounts to
Seven Per Cent

Sofia, December 5 (BTA) - The share of people engaged in
volunteer work in Bulgaria in 2014 was seven per cent, President
Rosen Plevneliev said Friday at the awards ceremony of
Volunteer Initiative 2014 on International Volunteer Day.

Plevneliev said this is a very good beginning which should be
built upon. In his words, most of the volunteers are young, well
educated people, who work or who continue their education, and
who live mostly in big cities. The Bulgarian volunteers know and
use international platforms, participate in international
initiatives and programmes and contribute so that solidarity
goes beyond the borders of one or more countries, Plevneliev
said.

The President described the passing 2014 year as "an extremely
hard year, with a combination of external and internal crises,
and a record-high number of disasters and accidents". He
recalled that when the central power and the local
administrations were in a difficult situation, thousands of
volunteers came to help and give hope to people in distress.

Out of 66 nominations for the Volunteer Initiative 2014 award,
the jury selected three winners. These are the volunteers of
Caritas Sofia and CVS Bulgaria in the integration centre with
the State Agency for Refugees, the Habitat Bulgaria Foundation,
and the Centre for Work with Volunteers with a school in
Haskovo, Southern Bulgaria. PK /ZH/
