String Quartets by Mozart, Webern and Beethoven to Be Performed in Sofia February 27

Sofia, February 24 (BTA) - "Quartets that have outrun time" will
be performed in the Bulgaria Chamber Hall in Sofia on February
27. Mozart's String Quartet No. 19 ("Dissonance"), Webern's
"Langsamer Satz" and Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 130 will be
played by the Sofia Quartet, the group said.

"Dissonance" is perhaps Mozart's most famous quartet, the last
of a series of six such works dedicated to Haydn. He wrote them
from 1782 (when Haydn's String Quartets Op. 33 appeared and
inspired the younger Austrian to create his own series) until
1785. The byname "Dissonance" was coined on account of the
quartet's unusual introduction, noted for its divergence from
the then-standard rules of harmony.

Webern wrote "Langsamer Satz" 120 years after Mozart's
"Dissonance", in the summer of 1905, when he was only 21 years
old. During that period Webern was influenced by late German
Romanticism.

Beethoven created String Quartet Op. 130 in 1826, forty-one
years after Mozart's "Dissonance." When it premiered in March of
that year, it drew a mixed reaction and Beethoven's publishers
convinced the composer to cut short the final part. It was the
last complete work written by Beethoven. He did not live to see
the edited version performed. String Quartet Op. 130 presents
beautiful themes, technical challenges and a wide range of
emotions on the surface, but it is also noted for its new
musical language and novel elements of composition. Beethoven
seems to have put all his knowledge, philosophy, aspirations and
dramas into this one piece of music.
